A Shorkie, sometimes called a Shorkie Tzu, is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Yorkshire Terrier. It is a companion dog rather than a recognized breed, so size and looks vary, but most adults weigh about 5 to 15 pounds and carry a long, silky, low-shedding coat in colors from black and tan to gold, brown and white. The face can take after the Yorkie's longer muzzle or the Shih Tzu's short one.
Many Shorkies are affectionate, playful and alert, combining the Shih Tzu's love of company with the Yorkie's bold terrier streak. They often bark at visitors and can be stubborn about housetraining. Their small size makes them easy to live with in tight spaces, but they need daily brushing or regular trims, careful dental care and gentle handling around children.
