The Appenzeller Sennenhund comes from the Appenzell region of northeastern Switzerland, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. It's a medium, muscular dog, usually 48 to 70 pounds, with a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings and a tail curled over its back.
Appenzellers are lively, alert and often reserved with strangers, and they tend to announce anything unusual. Bred to work all day, they usually need steady exercise, training and a job to do. The breed is rare in the United States, and dogs vary in how strongly they show these traits. An active, experienced household in Baltimore tends to be the best match.
