The American Eskimo Dog descends from white German Spitz dogs brought to the United States in the early 1900s, and the name has nothing to do with Arctic sled dogs. Eskies spent decades as circus performers and farm companions, which explains their quick minds and love of learning tricks. They come in toy, miniature and standard sizes, from roughly 6 to 35 pounds.
The plush white double coat, lion-like ruff and plumed tail are the breed's signature, and they come with regular brushing. Eskies tend to be affectionate and watchful, and many bark readily, so they fit best with people who are home often and enjoy daily training. Each dog's personality varies, so spend time getting to know the dog you're considering.
