The Australian Kelpie is a lean, prick-eared herding dog developed in Australia in the 1870s from Scottish working collies, built to move Merino sheep across hot, wide-open country. Stamina and toughness define the breed. Two strands exist today: show Kelpies selected for appearance, and Working Kelpies selected for ability, which often look more varied and carry more drive.
Kelpies are usually alert, quick to learn and devoted to their people, though often reserved with strangers. In Louisville, that means planning the daily routine: a fenced yard, a long run or game of fetch, and training that gives the dog's mind work too. Without it, a Kelpie may nip at heels, bark or invent destructive projects. Dogs vary, but adopters who enjoy training and dog sports tend to get the best from them.
