The American Staffordshire Terrier is a stocky, muscular, medium-sized dog, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a broad head, a short glossy coat and a tail that tapers to a point. Its roots are in the bull-and-terrier dogs that British immigrants brought over in the 1800s, and the AKC recognized the breed in 1936. Today most AmStaffs are companions, and many are goofy, affectionate and eager to be close to their people.
Their strength and enthusiasm call for steady training, leash manners and early socialization. Some AmStaffs are selective or intolerant with other dogs regardless of upbringing, so introductions deserve care. Dogs vary, and breed alone doesn't decide how a dog will behave. Landlords and insurers sometimes group the breed with pit bull types, so it's worth sorting out housing and coverage before you adopt.
