The Australian Shepherd took shape on ranches in the American West in the 1800s, not in Australia, from herding dogs that worked sheep and cattle. Aussies are medium-sized, usually 40 to 65 pounds, with a weather-resistant double coat in merle, black or red, often with white and copper trim and eyes that can be blue, brown or a mix.
Many are intelligent, loyal and tireless, and they tend to bond closely with family while staying reserved with strangers. Herding instinct can show up as nipping heels or rounding up kids, and a bored Aussie may bark or chew. The coat is an asset in cold months, but it sheds moderately to heavily, so expect regular brushing and a vacuum that earns its keep.
