Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the central Turkish plateau, bred to live alongside flocks and decide for themselves when to step in. Adults are large and rangy, with males often 110 to 150 pounds, and most have a short to medium fawn coat with a dark mask. The thick undercoat sheds heavily in season.
At home they're usually calm, observant and loyal to their family, but the guarding instincts stay strong. They mature slowly, think independently and respond poorly to harsh handling. In Atlanta, that means planning for steady socialization around neighbors, joggers and other dogs, and for a dog whose judgment about who belongs near the house may differ from yours.
