The Goldendoodle is a Golden Retriever and Poodle cross rather than a standardized breed, so one dog might weigh 20 pounds with loose waves while another tops 80 pounds with a shaggy, curly coat. The cross took off in the 1990s as a friendly, trainable companion, and some Goldendoodles work as therapy and guide dogs. Adult size is hard to guess from looks alone, so an adult dog with a known size is easier to plan around.
Most are social, bright and eager to please, and they tend to want company more than a quiet yard. In Tallahassee's humid climate the coat is the daily chore: waves and curls mat easily, especially after rain or muddy trails, and usually need professional grooming. Shedding varies, and no Goldendoodle is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic, so allergy-prone households should spend time with a dog first.
