The Basset Hound is a scent hound with French roots, later developed in Britain into the heavy-boned dog known today. It was bred to trail rabbit and hare on foot, which explains the long ears, loose skin and short legs. Most adults weigh 40 to 65 pounds and stand 11 to 15 inches tall, with a short, smooth coat that sheds moderately all year.
At home, a Basset is usually relaxed, sociable and fond of a couch, but the nose is always working. In Tallahassee, that means leashed walks, a close eye on portions and regular care for ears and skin folds, which hold moisture in humid weather. Bassets vary, so a dog's own energy, vocal habits and health matter more than any breed description.
