French Bulldogs began as small English Bulldogs carried to France by lace workers, then crossed with local dogs and adopted by Paris café society. The upright bat ears were fixed later in the United States. Frenchies are compact and muscular, with a square head, a very short muzzle, loose skin and a smooth coat in brindle, fawn, cream or pied patterns, and most weigh 16 to 28 pounds.
Many are playful, affectionate and adaptable, and they bark less than many breeds. That sweet nature comes with a trade-off: the flat face can cause breathing, heat, skin and spine problems. Dogs vary, and a Frenchie from the listings may be a mix, so plan for veterinary care and a calm, climate-controlled home rather than expecting a low-maintenance pet.
