The Appenzeller Sennenhund comes from the Appenzell region of northeastern Switzerland, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. It's a medium-sized, muscular dog, usually 48 to 70 pounds, with a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings and a tail curled over its back.
Appenzellers are alert, confident and often reserved with strangers, and they're quick to sound the alarm. Bred to work all day, they usually need daily exercise, training and a real job. In Miami that means planning activity around the heat and finding ways to keep a sharp mind busy indoors. The breed is rare in the US and dogs vary, so an active home with training experience tends to suit one best.
