Despite the name, the American Eskimo Dog has nothing to do with Arctic sled dogs. Its roots are in white German Spitz dogs that immigrants brought to the United States in the early 1900s, and the name changed during World War I. Eskies later became circus performers, and that quick, showy streak is still there. They come in toy, miniature and standard sizes, from roughly 6 to 35 pounds.
The white double coat, lion-like ruff and plumed tail are the breed's signature, and they come with heavy shedding and regular brushing. Eskies are alert and often reserved with strangers, and they bark readily, so training and socialization pay off in shared buildings. Many are playful and eager to please, though every dog is different. Most do best living indoors close to the family, not alone for long hours.
