Catahoulas came out of the swamps and woods of Louisiana, where they worked feral hogs and semi-wild cattle. Build and coat vary a lot, from merle "leopard" patterns to brindle and solid colors, and eyes can be blue, brown, amber or mismatched. Many dogs labeled Catahoula in adoption listings are mixes, so size and temperament can differ from dog to dog.
In Fort Lauderdale, that working background shows up as a need for daily jobs and secure fencing. Catahoulas are loyal with family, reserved with strangers, and often love water, which helps in a city with canals and a dog swim area, though canal banks call for a leash. Expect a dog that needs steady training and plenty of exercise before the heat sets in.
