Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the high plateau of central Turkey, where dogs of this type have protected sheep and goats from wolves for a very long time. They live alongside the flock and decide for themselves when to step in. Adults are giant, with males often 110 to 150 pounds, and most wear a fawn coat with a dark mask, though many colors occur.
At home, they tend to be calm, observant and deeply loyal, but the guarding instinct stays strong. Many are wary of strangers, protective of their territory and inclined to roam if the fence allows. They mature slowly, think for themselves and respond poorly to harsh handling. In Denver, that means planning for secure fencing, steady socialization on leashed outings and a dog whose judgment won't always match yours.
