Anatolian Shepherds come from the high plateau of central Turkey, where they guarded sheep and goats from wolves for thousands of years. They live with the flock and make their own decisions about threats. Adults are big and rangy, often 80 to 150 pounds, with a short to medium coat that's usually fawn with a dark mask, though other colors turn up.
At home they tend to be calm, observant and loyal, with strong guarding instincts. Many are wary of strangers, protective of their territory and willing to roam if a fence allows it. They mature slowly and respond best to patient, gentle training. In Colorado Springs, that means planning for fencing, steady socialization and a dog whose judgment won't always match yours.
