Border Collies come from the hills of the Anglo-Scottish border, where shepherds relied on them to gather sheep with an intense stare and very little direction. They're medium-sized and agile, usually 30 to 55 pounds, with rough or smooth double coats that are most often black and white. Shedding is moderate and heavier by season, so regular brushing helps through San Bernardino's long warm stretch.
Many are brilliant, devoted and eager to learn, and that intelligence needs an outlet. Without daily exercise and mental work, a Border Collie may invent jobs like herding children or chasing cars. Dogs vary, though, and a Border Collie or mix from a shelter may be calmer or more intense than the stereotype. A veterinarian can check for breed-linked conditions after adoption.
