American Staffordshire Terriers descend from the bull-and-terrier dogs that British immigrants brought to the United States in the 1800s, and the American Kennel Club first recognized them in 1936 under the name Staffordshire Terrier. AmStaffs are stocky, muscular medium-sized dogs with a broad head, pronounced cheeks, a short glossy coat in nearly any color and a short, tapering tail.
Many AmStaffs are confident, people-loving and goofy with their families, often eager to lean against or climb onto a favorite person. Their strength and enthusiasm call for training, leash manners and early socialization, and some are selective or intolerant with other dogs regardless of upbringing. Adopters should also check housing, insurance and local rules, since the breed is often grouped with pit bull types. They are common in shelters and frequently overlooked.
