Border Collies come from the hills along the Anglo-Scottish border, where shepherds prized dogs that could gather sheep with speed, focus and very little instruction. They're medium-sized and agile, usually 30 to 55 pounds, with a rough or smooth double coat. Black and white is the best-known pattern, but the breed comes in many colors.
Many Border Collies are quick learners that bond closely with their people. That intelligence comes with a real need for work, and a bored dog may invent jobs like herding children or chasing bikes. In Oceanside, that means building training, puzzles and sports into the week alongside walks. Dogs vary, and a calmer adult can be a different match than a young, high-drive one.
