Black Mouth Curs came out of the rural South, where farmers and hunters relied on them to tree squirrels and raccoons, bay hogs, move cattle and guard the homestead. Most have a short yellow, red, fawn or brindle coat and the dark muzzle behind the name. Adults typically weigh roughly 40 to 95 pounds, and the short coat sheds moderately year-round.
They're athletic, loyal and often protective, with plenty of stamina and drive. Many are sensitive to harsh handling and wary of strangers, and a high prey drive means cats and small animals need careful introductions. In Scottsdale, that drive pairs best with an owner who enjoys early outings, has secure fencing and keeps training calm and consistent. Dogs vary, so a cur's own personality matters more than any breed description.
