The Chow Chow is an ancient spitz from northern China, where it worked as a hunting, guarding and hauling dog. It's easy to spot: a lion-like ruff, a scowling face, a blue-black tongue and a square, heavy-boned build. Coats come rough and fluffy or short and smooth, and both are double layers that shed heavily.
Chows are dignified and independent, close to a small circle of people and reserved with everyone else. Many are quiet and tidy indoors, which fits a calm Montgomery home, but they need early socialization, steady training, regular brushing and careful management in the heat. They aren't eager-to-please dogs, so they suit adopters who value a self-possessed companion. Each Chow's personality differs, so look at the dog in front of you, not just the breed.
