In the US, the Cocker Spaniel is the American Cocker, the smallest member of the AKC Sporting Group. Its spaniel ancestors flushed woodcock for English hunters, which is where the name comes from. The breed has a rounded head, large dark eyes, a short square muzzle and a long, silky coat in black, solid colors or parti-colors, and it topped American popularity charts for eighteen years.
Many Cockers are cheerful, gentle and happiest near their people, and they respond best to soft, patient training. That bird-dog nose is worth planning around, so a leash matters on Huntsville's greenways. The coat needs regular brushing and professional trims, the ears need weekly checks, and eye and ear problems are real risks, though every Cocker differs.
