The British Shorthair is a stocky, round-faced cat with one of the densest coats in the cat world. Descended from Britain's working street and farm cats, it appeared at the first organized cat show in London in 1871, nearly disappeared during the world wars, and was rebuilt with help from Persian and other outcrosses. The plush blue cat with copper eyes is the classic image, but the breed comes in dozens of colors and patterns.
Many are calm, quiet companions that stay near their people without demanding a lap, and many dislike being carried. They mature slowly, often not filling out until about three years old. In Milwaukee, expect to brush the thick coat weekly, with extra sessions in spring and fall, and to watch portions through the long indoor winters. Veterinary checkups should include the heart and kidneys.
