Despite the name, the Balinese has no link to Indonesia. It is essentially a longhaired Siamese, developed in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s and named for the graceful movement of Balinese dancers. It has the colorpoint pattern and blue eyes of a Siamese, a slender body, and a silky single coat that ends in a plumed tail. Both a modern, wedge-headed type and a sturdier traditional type exist.
Many Balinese are social, playful and a little chatty, though usually quieter than a Siamese. The coat has no dense undercoat, so grooming is simple, but these cats generally want daily interaction. In Nashville, where many adopters live in apartments and bungalows, that means a home with window views, climbing space and someone around often. Adult shelter cats vary, so spend time getting to know the cat in front of you.
