The Chausie is a tall, long-legged cat whose ancestry includes the jungle cat and domestic breeds such as the Abyssinian. TICA accepted the breed for registration in 1995 and gave it championship status in 2013. Adults usually weigh 8 to 16 pounds, with a lean build, large ears set high on the head and a short coat in black, black ticked tabby or grizzled tabby.
Cats several generations removed from the jungle cat are fully domestic, and many are intelligent, playful and social. They often dislike long stretches alone, and some have sensitive stomachs. Chausies are rare in shelters, so watch the listings on this page, look at similar breeds or save a search. A Chausie with a window perch and a regular play routine tends to settle in well, though personalities vary from cat to cat.
