An extra-toes cat isn't a breed. It's any cat born with polydactyly, a harmless genetic variation that adds toes to one or more paws, often giving a front paw a mittenlike look. The trait is especially common along the East Coast, where ship cats were once prized as mousers. The Hemingway nickname comes from writer Ernest Hemingway, who was given a six-toed cat.
Most extra-toed cats are domestic shorthairs or longhairs, usually 6 to 15 pounds, so coats, sizes and personalities vary as much as in any group of cats. Shedding is moderate. The main care difference is claws, because extra ones can curl into the paw pads. In a Philly home, that means a few sturdy scratching posts and a regular trimming routine.
