Burmese are compact, muscular cats that feel heavier than they look, usually 8 to 13 pounds, with a short, satin-like coat and wide gold eyes. Sable brown is the classic color, but champagne, blue and platinum turn up too. Nearly all American Burmese trace back to Wong Mau, a walnut-brown cat brought to San Francisco in 1930.
The coat is the easy part: it sheds little and needs only a weekly rubdown with a rubber brush. The personality takes more planning. Burmese are social, clever and playful well into their senior years, and many follow people from room to room. Adult cats vary, so the Burmese in front of you may be calmer or shyer than the breed's reputation. Expect a lifespan of 12 to 17 years.
