Birmans are semi-longhaired colorpoint cats with deep blue eyes and pure white paws, called gloves in front and laces on the hind legs. The modern breed was developed in France after cats arrived from Burma around 1919, and the tale of sacred temple cats is legend, not documented history. Points come in seal, blue, chocolate, lilac and other colors, and kittens are born pale, with color deepening as they grow.
Many Birmans are gentle and sociable, with soft voices and a habit of following their people from room to room. The silky coat has little undercoat, so it mats less than many longhaired coats, though weekly combing still helps. Birmans take about three years to mature fully. In a city with real winters like Indianapolis, that mellow, indoor-friendly nature is a practical advantage.
