The Balinese is essentially a longhaired Siamese, developed in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s, and despite the name it has no link to Indonesia. It has the colorpoint pattern, blue eyes and slender build of a Siamese, with a silky single coat and a plumed tail. A sturdier traditional type and a wedge-headed modern type both exist.
Many Balinese are clever, social cats that follow their people from room to room and comment on the day in a softer voice than a Siamese. They like fetch, puzzle toys and high perches. In a Chicago apartment, that means vertical space and daily play matter more than floor area, and an adult cat from a shelter will have a personality all its own beyond the breed description.
