American Shorthairs descend from working cats that traveled on settlers' ships to guard cargo from rodents, then patrolled barns and homesteads across North America. The breed took shape in the early twentieth century, first as the Domestic Shorthair and renamed in the 1960s. Today's American Shorthair is a solid, muscular, medium-to-large cat with a broad face, full cheeks and a thick, hard-textured coat in dozens of colors. The silver tabby is the classic look.
Many are easygoing, adaptable and quietly affectionate, happy to supervise a household without demanding constant attention. They often get along with children and other pets, love hunting-style play and gain weight easily. In Marietta, many shorthaired cats waiting for homes are random-bred domestic shorthairs that share the look, so adopters may meet cats with similar traits under either name.
