HEARTBREAKING!!! YOUNG CHOW FOUND SHOT W PELLETS AND ALSO HEALING FROM BROKEN FEMUR AFTER ROAMING FOR WEEKS! EMERGENCY!!! NOR CAL (SACRAMENTO, CA)- City of Sacramento Animal Care Services, Front Street Shelter RESCUE AND FOSTER (OR FOSTER TO ADOPT) NEEDED FOR INJURED 1 YR, 38 LB BLUE CHOW BOY “BEARY”- ID #A742672- Dog friendly and sweet, recently neutered WHILE MEDICAL HAS BEEN DONE, AND THIS BOY IS NOW STABLE AND ALERT, SHELTER IS ASKING HELP AND TO EXIT ASAP- WHO CAN HELP???? Rescues need a committed foster or foster to adopt and a place for him to go. HE IS DESIGNATED RESCUE ONLY AT THIS TIME which means he can NOT be adopted from the shelter directly, we would need to refer adopters to a willing rescue – pls contact Robin Morgan directly if you are interested to foster or adopt Help! The Sacramento City Shelter is asking for help. We understand this young man estimated to be only 1 year old was found by animal control on 9/20 injured, and brought to an outside vet due to left hind lameness. At the time, he was noted as being in a lot of pain and had to be initially sedate to examine, understandably. Xrays revealed a broken femur, and incidentally and sadly found that he had also been shot with pellets at some point. We later learned he had been seen roaming for weeks as neighbors tried to capture him but couldn’t which also explains why he was covered also in foxtails that have since been removed. We are unclear if he was being fed at that time or how much, and if he was eventually hit by a car or how he injured his leg or paw however. Since then, he has been splinted and is not expected to need surgery, provided it is healing properly. We are told the pellets are not bothering him, but it is heartbreaking to know someone intentionally did this to him. Shelter Behavior notes provided state, “Patient has been housed in medical building since 9/22/26 and has overall been well behaved. It did take him a couple of days to warm up, especially after his leg was splinted and the E-collar was removed. Wags his tail when in kennel. Easy to leash up and take outside for potty walks. Is house broken and only goes to the bathroom outside. Asks for petting when outside and allows for head/neck/body scratches.” However, the shelter notes also state, “Is highly food motivated and has shown signs of food aggression. When medicating and feeding will place food in his kennel, remove leash when he is outside of kennel, and he runs in to the kennel to eat. Able to close the door without issues. AR,DVM”. When we asked for clarification regarding the food aggression, the shelter said, “Staff have said that he is growling when you get near his bowl. He has taken food from hands okay but it is more based around the kennel and bowl.“ The resource guarding may be the result of having to scour for food and may improve in time as he is so young. But because of it, he was made Rescue Only despite all the positive handling notes we now has since warming up to staff. The shelter also noted, “Our medical team is hoping to not have to do surgery and are currently just doing splint changes for him. They said that he will likely just need about 5 more weeks of weekly splint changes before doing another X-Ray to ensure the fracture is healing. The pellets are from shots and were an incidental finding when they did X-rays for him, they do not seem to be affecting him currently. His behavior has been conflicting depending on the staff handling him and is currently healing from an injury. They have been able to take him out, pet him, handle him and it appears that his negative behavior centers around his kennel and food.” We are calling him Beary as he deserves a name. The shelter also provided us with several videos which show him able to be pet all over his head and body, exit his kennel easily, and be leashed with as slip lead no problem. Beary was also tested with another dog and did absolutely fine, interested for a few seconds and then not, as in typical chow fashion. The shelter can provide the full notes for both medical and behavior. He was recently neutered on 9/29 at which time his splint was redone. Now we need to find a foster or foster to adopt home we can refer to a willing rescue so Beary can be saved from the shelter and find the loving home he so deserves. Therefore, if you may be interested in fostering, fostering to adopt, or helping in some other way (ie., pledging for his rescue), please email robinmorgan@cox.net asap at Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to find placement asap, and we can work on pairing a foster to a rescue group to help.
