Meet Rose—2 years old, 72 pounds, and one incredibly sweet house hippo! Rose belonged to a homeless couple and had raised multiple litters of puppies. When her remaining four puppies didn’t sell, the couple moved camps and left Rose and her babies behind to fend for themselves in a rural part of the city. Thankfully, local folks noticed them beside—and sometimes right in—the road and began feeding them. But one of our superheroes knew they needed more than meals. These innocent puppies were standing in the street, barking at roadwork machinery, completely unaware of the danger. She stepped in, and now Rose and all four puppies are safe! Rose has since moved into a wonderful foster home with trainers, where she’s been getting to know dogs of all sizes. Their evaluation? They’re in love! Her foster family says she gets along beautifully with male and female dogs, from Great Danes down to their 25-pound girl. She’s quiet, nondestructive, hasn’t had any potty accidents, and knows how to use the doggy door! She’s beginning to discover toys, loves being near people, and mostly just wants a soft place to rest. And Rose has her own sweet ways of saying “I love you.” She’ll gently put her paw on you—or offer little love nibbles to both people and dogs! This is often called “corn cobbing”: tiny, gentle nibbles with the front teeth, like nibbling kernels off a corn cob. In a relaxed dog like Rose, it can be a form of affectionate grooming and bonding. After raising so many babies and being left behind, it’s finally Rose’s turn to be someone’s baby. A soft bed, a loving family, and a lifetime of belonging would suit this sweetheart perfectly.
