About Rusty

Meet Rusty, a loyal and sweet 4-year-old German Shepherd. He came to the shelter after his previous caregiver faced personal medical challenges. Rusty thrives in a home with experience in caring for Shepherds. He has lived harmoniously with adults and children as young as 11 years old, even sharing a bed with a child in a temporary home. Rusty cohabitated with a senior lab after a thoughtful introduction and has met other dogs at the shelter. While he may enjoy a canine companion, a proper introduction at the shelter is essential before adoption. Rusty prefers environments without high foot traffic, so dog beaches may not be ideal for him. Notably, he has a prey drive, which means he needs a feline-free home. He is house trained and will communicate when he needs to go out, and he does well when left alone. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is currently offering "Pawsitivity Bucks" with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher helps newly adopted canines and their guardians connect with local positive reinforcement behavior consultants to kick-start their relationship on the right paw!
