This stunning young Australian Cattle Dog (Heeler) mix is estimated to be around 2 years old and is ready for a fresh start. Calico came to our shelter through a rescue after reportedly living in a difficult situation where she was being mistreated, but despite her past, she's eager to embrace a brighter future. Because we don't know much about her history, we're still getting to know Calico's personality. What we've learned so far is that she's an athletic, energetic dog who loves activity and thrives when she has something to do. Like many herding breeds, she's intelligent, driven, and always ready for action. She'll likely do best with an adopter who understands the unique traits and needs of herding breeds. She'll benefit from continued training, structure, and plenty of physical and mental enrichment to help her become the best version of herself. She's looking for an adventure partner, a training buddy, and someone committed to helping her succeed. Based on our time with her so far, we've learned that Calico is a smart, driven dog who loves having a job to do and enjoys being around people. She walks nicely on leash and is always excited to greet volunteers with her beautiful smile. We're still learning more about Calico every day, and we can't wait to see her personality continue to blossom. We do not do same-day adoptions. You will be asked to return for at least one follow-up visit, then take the dog home for a trial period before officially adopting. You must be 21 years or older to adopt from STAF. Due in part to increasing coyote activity/incidents in the area and the difficulty of predicting how a dog will respond to invisible fence training, we can not adopt to homes with invisible fences. We do request vet and personal references. We can facilitate adoptions within a 30-mile radius of our Cincinnati-based shelter.
