About Luke In Nc
Luke is a small standard red-coated dachshund with a smooth, short coat and a lot of personality. He’s seven years old and has lived most of his life with an elderly owner who let him call the shots, so he picked up some stubborn habits along the way. Since coming into rescue, he’s worked hard with his foster mom—who’s also his trainer—to learn new commands. He knows "leave it" and is picking up obedience skills, especially when treats are involved. He’s house trained, crate trained, and walks well on leash. Luke thrives in a quieter environment where adults (14+) respect his boundaries—he does not get along with cats, and he’s selective with dog friends, preferring calm, small dogs. He’s not suited to homes with small children, apartments, high-rises, or condos. Luke is happiest with a fenced yard for daily zoomies and has lost weight recently but could shed a pound or two more. He’s not a fan of vet visits, especially nail trims, so a muzzle is used. He tends to be guarded with new people and will need a slow introduction to visitors. An approved adopter must meet Luke in Winston-Salem, NC, and work directly with his foster to continue his progress. He’s looking for a patient, experienced dachshund owner ready to give him a loving final home. Click apply and let the tail-wagging begin!

How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?
Luke, as a dachshund, is happiest when he can spend time outdoors in a secure, fenced yard where he can zoom, explore, and sniff. He doesn't need acres, but regular access to a safe outdoor area is important.
Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?
Dachshunds, like Luke, aren’t ideal for homes with small children, as they tend to be sensitive and can be overwhelmed by unpredictable behavior. Homes with adults or older children are a better fit.
