About Scooter

Scooter has had his world turned upside down and is looking for a gentle, understanding adopter who can offer him the comfort and security he craves. This small Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix is about 9 years old and weighs in at just 9 pounds, but his loyalty runs deep. After his owner's hospitalization left him alone for too long, Scooter is cautious and slow to trust, and he needs someone patient who will let him find his footing at his own pace. When he bonds, his happiest moments are by your side: curled up on your lap, following you around the house, or snuggled with you in bed. He thrives in a quiet home, with no young children, few visitors, and someone who understands dogs that need time and respect boundaries. While Scooter is dog and cat friendly, he isn’t playful with them but coexists peacefully. He can be nippy if startled or scared, though this has improved in foster care, and he's barky—which means apartment living is not for him. Scooter is fully house trained but may have accidents as he adjusts to new routines or environments. He’s neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and will have a dental before adoption. Adopters must live within 175 miles of Bettendorf, IA, and current pets must be up to date on care. A meet and greet is required by appointment only. Every animal deserves a happy ending. This one starts with you.

Questions about Scooter

  • What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?

Scooter's Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix background makes him best suited for a calm, stable home where routines are predictable. He'll thrive with someone who enjoys quiet companionship and isn't in a bustling or noisy environment.

  • How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?

Scooter is happy with a small, secure yard to explore, but as a small dog he doesn't require a large outdoor area. His real focus is on being near his person, indoors or out.

  • Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?

Given Scooter's background and temperament, he is not well-suited for homes with young children. Ideally, his new home would be adult-only or with older, dog-savvy kids.
