About Max

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.05/20/26. I’d like to introduce Max. He’s a big, strikingly handsome boy—about a year and a half old and already around 90 pounds. He looks like a German Shepherd mix (maybe with some Yellow Lab), and his face is especially memorable. Max has a calm nature, with that fun, playful energy you’d expect from a young dog. Max came to VGSR from a shelter in Roanoke, Virginia, where he was surrendered. I don’t know much about his past, but he seems sensitive to verbal corrections and very eager to please. He thrives on praise (which he earns most of the time!), though he’s still learning his manners. He’s friendly and wants to say hello to everyone he meets, but because he’s so big and still working on leash skills, walks can be a bit of a challenge. He’s mostly house-trained, with only the occasional accident. Max is a total snuggler who likes to stay close and will happily follow me around the house. He isn’t a runner, and at the end of walks he often pulls toward home. He was a little wary his first night here, but he settled in quickly. His big head can look a bit intimidating at first, but he’s truly a sweetheart. He has an easygoing temperament and gets along well with my older, larger shepherd. He’s curious about cats and will chase if they run, so we’re working on that in his foster home. He also seems to have a strong prey drive toward smaller animals, so I wouldn’t recommend a home with cats or small dogs. He’s friendly with both adults and children. I’ll update his write-up this weekend as I get to know him a bit more. He’ll be at the adoption event at the PetSmart in Springfield on Saturday, May 23rd.
