About River
River is a young Dalmatian whoās been through a lot, but his spirit hasnāt dimmed. He arrived at the rescue severely underweight after a lifetime spent chained outside with little food or social contact. In just four weeks of foster care, River has put on 10 pounds with a careful feeding plan and is finally ready to start searching for his forever family (or a foster-to-adopt home while he finishes veterinary care). Right now, River is still undergoing Lyme treatment and will need to be neutered before adoption is finalized. He is medium-to-large, expected around 45 lbs once filled out. River is sweet and people-oriented despite everything heās endured. Heās crate trained, working on house training, and knows āsit.ā He loves dog beds and is good on leash or in a fenced yard, but hasnāt quite learned about toys. Because Dalmatians are prone to urinary stones, he eats prescription urinary food, which may be a lifelong expenseāadopters need to consider this commitment. Years without enough food left their mark: River is very food motivated and needs slow-feeder bowls, may search counters or trash for snacks, and should be fed separately from other pets. Food management will likely be an ongoing need, so a home without toddlers or small children is best. He does get along well with other dogs. His feelings about cats arenāt known yet. River is vaccinated, heartworm negative, and will be neutered and microchipped soon. He still sometimes has accidents in the house, but is learning quickly.
