Hot Wheels is a 2-3-year-old Havanese mix whose name perfectly reflects his incredible resilience and determination. Despite his physical challenges, he zips through life with speed, spirit, and a heart full of joy. After arriving at the shelter, Hot Wheels was evaluated by a veterinarian who suspects he has Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), which may explain how he came to be there. He is currently being treated for wounds on his hind feet, from dragging himself before receiving proper care and he is healing beautifully. He handles each wound cleaning like a champ, showing nothing but patience and trust. He was recently evaluated by a Freedom Ride veterinarian who suspects wound care will no longer be necessary in the near future. His amazing spirit quickly won over the veterinary team at the shelter, who were so touched by him that they generously donated his wheelchair. Hot Wheels is doing wonderfully learning how to use it! He may still need a little supervision, though- he's convinced he's more of an off-road monster truck than a sports car (we've tried to explain otherwise). He's doing great on short walks, where his foster supports his hind end with a leash, allowing him to enjoy the outdoors comfortably while building strength and confidence. At home, Mr. Wheels lives with three other dogs ranging from 10 to 70 pounds, and he adores them. He tries his best to keep up, and honestly, he gets around impressively fast, whether in his chair or with a little assistance. He crates easily when unsupervised and settles in without issue. While he's not much of a barker, he will alert if he hears something unfamiliar. Hot Wheels has been excellent with house training. He keeps his crate clean with no accidents, and while his foster uses a belly band indoors as a precaution, he has been doing wonderfully going potty outside. While Hot Wheels may be considered "special needs," the love he gives more than makes up for any extra care he may require. His tail wags, cuddles, and face kisses are his way of saying thank you to everyone who has helped him along the way and he can't wait to share that love with a forever family.
