FOREVER HOME NEEDED Meet Checkers! Checkers is a 2-year-old, 10 lb Chihuahua mix who is searching for a loving home. Checkers is up for anything his people are doing--cuddles on the couch, zoomies with a toy, or an excited walk around the neighborhood. He is also great at self-play with squeaking toys or snoozing in the sunniest spot in the house. After 2 months in his foster home, Checkers has settled into his spunky personality. He absolutely adores people, has grown to trust his foster humans and their friends, and is eager to learn any trick you are willing to teach him. Checkers has the basics down (house trained, crate trained, no furniture chewing, leash walking, sit, twirl, touch) and will thrive in a home with adopters who understand how smart he is and can work with him on training his next set of skills (he's currently working on wait and recall). He is even starting to enjoy the finer things in life including Mighty-O’s dog donuts and the comfiest spot on the couch. He is a little guy, so the world can feel big to him, but he is eager to explore every part of it. He loves to walk confidently around the neighborhood, meeting every dog big or small with a playful sniff and without a bark (even at home, he barks very rarely). He expresses some leash reactivity when he cannot meet a dog he sees, cannot play with a squirrel, or has to walk near a garbage truck. He is starting to love parks and is working on self entertaining during picnics. He loves car adventures, has done well taking the bus and the ferry, and even did well with a day at the office. His true personality is shining through ~ goofy, affectionate, playful, and completely endearing! This sweet little guy is looking for a patient household where he can express his true self as your loyal, smart, and joyful companion as he lights up every room in your home. He would not do well with small children because he sometimes growls when being pet by a new person, but would do well with other dogs or as a solo dog in your home. His other flaws include stealing the occasional sock and getting grumpy at night. With a family that understands the importance of time, space, and gentle encouragement, Checkers is sure to keep growing into the best version of himself. Checkers is UTD on vaccinations, microchipped, and neutered. His adoption fee is $500.
