And then there’s Whoopie Cushion — lovingly known as Cush — who arrives like a one-dog celebration parade, convinced every person, dog, couch cushion, squeaky toy, and backyard deserves his full enthusiasm. This 7-8 month old, 50 lb Doodle was surrendered to a shelter by his owner, and the shelter immediately reached out to DPS because they knew this goofy, lovable boy deserved a soft landing. Of course we said yes. Since then, Cush has been busy making volunteers laugh, charming every human he meets, and proving that life is simply more entertaining with a giant doodle puppy in it. The Dog Who Rolls With Everything From the moment he arrived, Cush handled every transition like a seasoned professional. New people? Great. New dogs? Excellent. New house? Amazing. He happily romped with a young Boxer, politely sniffed the Myth puppies during their photo shoot, and then lollygagged his way into foster care like he’d been doing this his whole life. He’s the definition of a dog who rolls with the punches. The Morning Routine (Featuring Emotional Support Potty Breaks) Cush starts his mornings around 7:30am when the teenagers wake up for school. Morning potty time is very serious business... mostly because there are PEOPLE and DOGS and THINGS HAPPENING and Cush does not want to miss any of it. He benefits tremendously from what his foster lovingly calls an “emotional support human” sitting calmly in the yard while he remembers to actually go potty. He’s still learning, and consistency plus calm encouragement go a long way. Once his morning responsibilities are complete, he enthusiastically supervises the kids getting ready for school. His specialties include stealing a shoe while someone is putting on the other one, requesting emergency cuddles before anyone leaves the house, and attempting dramatic escape missions out the front door to join the school run. Velcro Work-From-Home Assistant During the workday, Cush settles into full Velcro mode. He happily spends hours snoozing under a desk with at least one paw or body part touching his person at all times. He adores soft squeaky toys, crinkly toys, plush toys... honestly, any toy he can rotate between every few minutes. It’s common to find the couch covered in a carefully curated collection he’s hauled out himself. He entertains himself well but always wants to remain near his humans. At the end of the day, he greets everyone returning home with full-body excitement and another round of joyful zoomies before settling in for couch time and snuggles. Olympic-Level Zoomies While Cush absolutely has an off switch, his “on” mode is legendary. This boy has Olympic-level zoomies. Not normal puppy zoomies — parkour zoomies. He launches himself off furniture, twists midair, races through the house with wild joy, and generally behaves like an oversized muppet discovering gravity for the first time. An active home that appreciates a goofy, athletic adolescent dog would be ideal for him. He’d likely excel at agility or another activity that gives both his body and brain an outlet. He’s playful, social, and always trying to make friends, even with older dogs who may not fully appreciate his enthusiasm. Boneless for Belly Rubs Once the energy burns out, Cush becomes a total puddle. His foster says one of the funniest things about him is how dramatically he melts when someone finds the perfect scratch spot. This has resulted in him sliding off couches mid-scratch, becoming wedged between furniture because he refused to interrupt the belly rubs, and fully collapsing across people in snoring dead weight while they lose all circulation in their legs When Cush relaxes, he commits completely. Smart, Social, & Still Learning Cush walks nicely on a harness when walked solo and enjoys exploring the world with his people. He doesn’t bark at dogs or squirrels on walks and generally approaches life with happy curiosity. He’s still very much a puppy, though. He chews, occasionally digs if something catches his interest, and sometimes barks when startled, when he wants to play, or when the TV is off and he catches sight of his own reflection staring back at him. (Turning the TV on solves this existential crisis immediately.) He crates overnight beside the resident dogs and settles nicely after a little initial protest. His Perfect Home Cush’s ideal home will appreciate exactly who he is right now: a giant-hearted adolescent doodle with endless enthusiasm, hilarious antics, impressive athleticism, and a deep need to be involved in absolutely everything his humans are doing. He’ll thrive with people who appreciate a goofy, high-energy puppy, can continue his potty-training routine with consistency, want a very affectionate Velcro companion, enjoy active play balanced with serious cuddle sessions, and will laugh at his antics instead of expecting instant perfection. Cush plays hard. Cush chills hard. And life with him is never boring.
