About Benny

Adoption Fee: $475 When available, all animals are fixed in accordance with Colorado law, up to date on vaccines (may need boosters), and microchipped! What we know: Transferred from Fresca Fund/Family Pet Care in Forth Worth, Texas; found as a stray, picked up by animal control with multiple fractures -- right and left femur as well as pelvis. Femoral fractures surgically repaired 1/20/26, pelvis treated with crate rest. Follow-up x-rays show successful treatment, but Benny is still growing back the muscle mass lost to healing in his back legs. He should be allowed to work up to strenuous exercise rather than start out with it. Approximately one year old, neutered, UTD vaccines. *Benny gravitates more towards women than men, but is not averse in a way that he should avoid men altogether. His ideal home would be one that gives him regular, positive experiences with men who can be patient, gentle, and welcoming so that he can move past his hesitation rather than affirm it by avoiding men. Benny is currently in a foster home with male and female adults.* From the foster: Benny is just about a perfect companion and has been a great source of joy to foster this week. When we first picked him up he was a little unsure about me but he bonded instantly with my wife. He follows her everywhere. After a day or two, he started approaching me for affection but he is still focused on where my wife is if she is not in the same room as us. Benny is a very gentle dog. He takes treats very gingerly from my hand and is also very gentle when playing in the house. He has access to several dog toys and like to chew them but does not destroy or rip apart the toys. Benny is a great house guest. He does not run about the house, does not pull things out of the trash, does not climb on the furniture, lays down quietly while we eat and does not beg for any scraps. He knows a few basic commands like sit and come here. He is motivated by praise and affection as we work on new commands. At night he stays at the side of our bed and does not get up and explore while we sleep. We are working on crate training and he will relax in his crate if we are nearby, but he becomes anxious when we are out of sight and hearing. He still needs more time and work to help him overcome his separation anxiety. Benny also does terrific on walks. He does not pull hard on the leash and understands 'leave it' and 'come on'. He also does not lunge at passing dogs or at dogs behind fences at we pass. He is even better on short runs. In the yard he is curious about the neighbors' dogs but does not bark. He is learning to play fetch and likes being able to run and chase me in the yard. He has been introduced to my son's dog and did great on a walk with the other dog. He also did great when he met my two year old grandson. Although he will be a bit shy when he first meets new people, give him a chance and Benny will quickly bond and be a great family companion. www.coloradopuppy.org/how-to-adopt
