About Duke

A060700 Duke; intact Belgian Malinois mix; est. 9 months; 61 lbs Contact: Calaveras County Animal Services (209)754-6509 Website: https://animal.calaverasgov.us/ Email: animal@calaverascounty.gov Young Duke here is part of the latest large group of dogs to arrive at the shelter. Kept in kennels and crates for most of their lives, these dogs have lacked appropriate developmental and healthy living experiences. They are a bit undernourished, as well. Yet, although they were initially fearful in the chaotic shelter, they have proven to be quite sweet-tempered and easy to handle, allowing us to coax them into friendship with multiple new humans. Additionally, they all seem to get along great with other dogs. Duke is the favorite of several staff and volunteers. Understandable, as he's a totally lovable guy—and SO handsome! He moves like a ballet dancer, all liquid athleticism. He seems to be one of the more confident of his group, yet is still hesitant in some ways. In a short time, however, he has begun to relax nicely and enjoy himself as we shower him with love and affection and treats. He seems to have either been trained to heel, or has a natural inclination to stick close to his handler's side. Walking him is pleasant, though we do need to mind we don't tangle our feet with his; he sticks that close! We kinda love that, actually. Duke soaks up affection, always welcoming contact. And snacks. He thinks snacks are pretty awesome and takes them gently. We are just getting to know these dogs and gradually finding out more about their individual personalities; we will update our bios with any significant discoveries about their individual natures. However, we can say that with their sweetness and Malinois and German Shepherd heritage, they have good promise as smart, active, loving companions. Duke will need to be neutered before he can go home with you. He keeps his inner kennel tidy, which is promising, though we cannot make promises on house training. We do not have info on his attitude toward cats at this time. As always, a meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home.
