Penny is a young Belgian Malinois mix who arrived at the shelter with a large group of dogs, all from the same challenging background. She spent most of her early life in kennels and crates, so she missed out on some important social experiences and was a bit undernourished by the time she reached Calaveras County Animal Services in San Andreas, CA. Despite her rocky start, Penny has shown real resilience—she’s genuinely sweet-natured and settles in with new people more quickly than expected. As long as she has a gentle introduction, she easily makes new friends and gets along well with other dogs at the shelter. Penny thrives on affection and closeness. She’ll climb into your lap at every opportunity and is always on the lookout for treats and hugs. She often jumps up for a cuddle, so a home with older kids would be the safest fit for now. Her energy is typical for a Malinois her age: awkward on leash, not a hard puller, but full of curiosity and movement. She can be a bit clumsy, weaving around legs, and sometimes still shows fearfulness around cars. Penny isn’t house trained yet and will need patience and structure as she continues to learn about home life. She is not a fit for homes with cats.
