Duke is a big, handsome gentleman with an even bigger soft side once you spend time with him. He has been described as calm, friendly, and easygoing with people, and volunteers have absolutely fallen for his combination of size and sweetness. He walks beautifully on leash, rides well in the car, takes treats politely, and enjoys getting out to explore the world at a relaxed pace. He may greet you with a deep bark from his kennel if he feels overlooked, but honestly, Duke seems to think everyone should stop and say hello to him anyway. He is affectionate, social, and fully capable of delivering giant slobbery kisses when invited. Duke can be a little unsure in new situations at first, and there have been reports that he does not do well living with other animals, so he would likely be happiest as the only pet in the home where he can fully relax and soak up all the attention for himself. Outside of those situations, though, he has consistently shown a calm and thoughtful demeanor, including during walks, outings, and interactions with staff and volunteers. There is something especially endearing about a big dog who moves through the world with gentle manners and quiet loyalty, and Duke has that quality in spades. He feels like the kind of companion who would happily settle in beside his person and just be part of everyday life.
