Yes, on a dog-by-dog basis. Has this dog lived with cats? Unknown. [The Lycoming County SPCA does not "cat test" dogs per the Association of Shelter Veterinarian's Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.] --- What volunteers have to say about this animal: Meet Lorcan - Handsome Wanderer, Curious Mind, Soft-Hearted Companion Lorcan is a Retriever-Terrier mix with a gentle presence, an inquisitive nature, and a quiet sweetness that reveals itself over time. He's the kind of dog who likes to stay close, even if he's not quite ready for hands-on affection right away. He may hesitate with direct handling, but he doesn't go far, often circling back, checking in, and choosing to remain near his person. It's his way of saying, "I'm interested... just give me a minute." What Lorcan Is Like: - Friendly and curious, with a thoughtful approach to new things - Prefers proximity over immediate physical affection - Enjoys short bursts of play, especially with a tennis ball - Stable around everyday sights and sounds - No resource guarding On leash, Lorcan may start off pulling with enthusiasm, but he settles into a more relaxed pace as he goes. He's easily distracted (there's a lot to see!) and may lose interest in toys quickly, but his curiosity keeps him engaged with the world around him. Meeting new people can be his biggest hurdle. He tends to avoid direct engagement at first and prefers to approach on his own terms. With dogs, he can come in a bit forward and vocal, but once introductions are out of the way, he adjusts and interactions improve. Lorcan's Ideal Home Looks Like: - Kids around 6+, on a case-by-case basis - Other dogs, pending meet-and-greets - A patient home that allows him to warm up at his own pace - People who appreciate a dog who bonds gradually Lorcan is a quiet charmer, the kind of dog who builds trust slowly, but meaningfully. --- Condensed Staff Assessment Notes: Lorcan is a friendly dog with a curious nature. He preferred not to be handled directly but stayed close and would quickly return after wandering away. During our walk, he initially pulled on the leash, but this decreased over time. He was stable around everyday objects and noises, quickly recovering when startled, and showed no signs of resource guarding. Lorcan enjoyed short bursts of play, especially with a tennis ball, although he often lost interest due to distractions. His biggest challenge was meeting new people; he was hesitant and often positioned himself to avoid direct engagement. He approached new dogs rudely, typically coming in head-on and vocal. However, after initial introductions, he improved and interaction ended positively.
