About Leona

Leona came to the shelter in rough shape—neglected, missing patches of her black fur, and wary of her surroundings. Today, she’s a survivor: about 3-5 years old, medium-sized, previously spayed, and microchipped, with all her vaccinations up to date. After the rescue took her in, Leona started to show her true self: gentle, shy, but socially tolerant. She prefers to keep to herself, but in the company of other dogs (large and small) she does just fine and takes corrections well. Leona's play style is dainty and reserved—more likely to inspect the perimeter than romp in the middle. She’s calm with people, growing affectionate with those who take time for slow introductions. Once she trusts you, you’ll be greeted with a tail wag, cuddles, and the occasional leap into your arms. She’s comfortable being handled, crate-trained, and generally quiet, but don’t expect much exuberant play—she’d rather observe than jump in. Leona does have a manageable medical need: she requires daily eye ointment for Keratoconjunctivitis (dry eye) to prevent redness and pain. She also gets nervous around loud noises, so calm environments suit her. Leona is currently with the rescue on Orcas Island, WA—meeting her in person there is required. If you’re looking for a companion who thrives in a stable, gentle home and you’re comfortable giving daily eye care, Leona could be the right fit. Ready to meet your new best friend? Apply now!
