About Leona
Click apply and let the tail-wagging begin! Leona was discovered as a stray in extremely neglected condition, missing much of her fur, and brought to a Los Angeles area shelter in early November. Now safe and recovering beautifully, Leona is estimated to be between 3-5 years old, weighing around 49 lbs. She is a spayed, medium-sized chow chow/shar-pei mix with a gorgeous black coat that is still growing back in. Since her rescue, she has received extensive veterinary care, including bloodwork, microchipping, and up-to-date vaccinations. Leona’s personality shines through her calm temperament and gentle nature. She is a shy girl who enjoys keeping to herself but is socially tolerant and accepts corrections gracefully. Leona prefers peaceful environments and benefits from slow introductions. She greets trusted friends with a sweet tail wag and, once comfortable, becomes quite affectionate—she loves cuddling, jumping into arms, and being doted on. Her playstyle is dainty and reserved; she is content to sniff around rather than engage in energetic romps, though she can be seen running happily alongside other dogs in videos. She is friendly with dogs of all sizes, does well in group settings at the boarding facility, and handles touch and handling with ease. Leona is crate-trained, copes well in small or enclosed spaces, and walks nicely on leash—though she sometimes pulls toward interesting scents. She is somewhat nervous around loud noises and would thrive in a quieter, patient home. Please note, Leona has been diagnosed with keratoconjunctivitis (dry eye), so her adopter must provide daily ointments or drops to keep her comfortable. Currently, Leona is safe with the rescue founder on peaceful Orcas Island, WA, as she waits for someone to offer her the stable, loving home she deserves. Potential adopters need to be willing to meet her in person on Orcas Island for a possible same-day adoption, ensuring she is the perfect fit. Leona deserves a knowledgeable and caring family ready to help her thrive. They are waiting with paws crossed! Apply now!

Questions about Leona
What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?
Chow chow/shar-pei mixes generally thrive in calm, stable homes with patient owners. They appreciate quieter environments where they can relax and feel safe, rather than highly active or bustling households.
How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?
A securely fenced yard is a bonus but not necessary as long as daily walks and outdoor time are provided. These dogs enjoy sniffing and exploring but do not usually require extensive outdoor space.
Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?
With proper socialization, chow chow/shar-pei mixes can live well with respectful, older children. Supervision and gentle handling are recommended due to their sensitive and sometimes shy nature.
