About Kona

COURTESY POST—-Meet Kona — our little survivor with the biggest heart. Kona is a 3½-year-old black Chow Chow who came to us from a rural shelter in the Raleigh, NC area. When she was first rescued, she was in heartbreaking condition. One look at her intake photo tells the story of a dog who had endured far more than any animal ever should. But today… thanks to the love and patience of her foster mom, Kona has transformed into the cutest little fluffy bear you could imagine. ✨ Kona’s life before rescue was incredibly hard. She lived tied out on a cable with a transient man who sadly passed away. Kona was left behind and somehow managed to survive on her own for a long time before animal control was finally able to trap her. The deep scar around her neck is a painful reminder of that past. When Kona first arrived, she was completely shut down and terrified of everything that moved. It took time, patience, medical care, and gentle training to help her feel safe again. She even needed entropion surgery on both eyes, which we made sure she received right away. And slowly… the real Kona began to shine through. Now this once-fearful girl is goofy, bouncy, and full of life. She absolutely adores other dogs, especially male dogs, and loves to play. Doggy daycare is one of her favorite things, and seeing her run around happily with friends is nothing short of amazing considering where she started. Kona is also incredibly affectionate and sensitive for a Chow. She bonds deeply with her people and learns quickly. She has been working with a professional behavioral trainer using a positive reinforcement program and has made beautiful progress. Because cats are a little too exciting for her, Kona will need a cat-free home. But with the right family and some dog friends, she will continue to blossom into the happy dog she was always meant to be. Kona is crate trained, house trained, heartworm negative, spayed, and up to date on all vaccinations. Most importantly, she is ready for someone to finally give her the love and security she has waited her whole life for. Kona has survived so much. Now she just needs someone to choose her.
