He is such a fun / friendly pup! He has the absolute best time running in the yard and having zoomies. He is never dog reactive, even if a dog is barking at him. He loves being pet and gives kisses! He is the perfect dog for sure! Per staff 3/2: Carter was laying on the bed when i approached his kennel, his eyes were soft, ears to the side and loose body. When i opened the door to leash he gor off the bed and came to the front of the kennel. He lowered his head with tail down and gingerly came out of the kennel once being leashed. He was hesitant to go down the stairs, i tried luring him with treats and he made it down a few. However there were more stairs to go down and he began to tremble. We went back inside to the other iso door that leads outside with only two steps. He was able to walk down the two steps with minimal hesitation. In the parking lot he was hyper vigilant with all the loud noises coming from the main road. I crouched down and he leaned his body into mine allowing gentle/slow pets. He easily returned to his kennel and unleashed without issue. Per staff 2/26: He's in a large kennel now, from a crate. He was at the front, panting, wide eyes. Ate chicken from my hands, gently. I opened the gate and he circled away and lip licked, head down, averted gaze, then came forward and was ways to leash. Walked slowly and tentatively, went into an office. Ignored treats, stress panting, yawning. Stayed close as I let him, tolerant when placing a calming collar on. Stood still most of the time. When placing back in kennel, had to step on and he followed, tried coming back out. Should remain rescue only behaviorally for now. Per staff 2/25: An ACA let me know this morning Carter was less hesitant to come out and be leashed today! She let me know she crouched down and reached out her hand and he was able to be leashed up. I saw him out on the walk, his eyes were wide and ears back with tail down, however continued to walk with the ACA. Per staff on 2/23: "Very nervous in his crate, but would inch closer to the door and then huddle back in the corner. Carter gave me some submissive smiles, and some trembles. He was curious about the slip lead when presented, but shied away when it got too close to his head. I was able to loop it over his head, and he cautiously exited the crate. Walking was a little difficult at first, as Carter would freeze at any loud noise, and he was a little weary of thresholds. In the volunteer office, he stood next to me and leaned against my leg, choosing not to explore or sniff around the room. He showed no interest in a soft toy or a ball. Two other staff members entered the room and he did not react other than tucking his tail and lowering his head. Eventually he jumped up next to me on the bench, licked my cheek and then began licking at my knee. An employee took out a phone to try and take a better photo, and Carter immediately began to tremble harder, panting and yawning. After the two employees left, I walked Carter through the hallways to take him outside. He walked very slow, but needed little-to-no pressure on the leash, responding better to soft words of encouragement. Outside he was still very unsure, but did seem to enjoy sniffing the snow. When we returned indoors, we walked through the lobby and SB stood up to greet him; she knelt down and spoke to Carter softly, and he approached her while also lowering himself. He accepted pets, and gave her face a lick. When returning to his crate, he hurried into it. I reached in to remove the leash, and he gave a couple good, full-body shakes. He licked my hand through the crate door several times, and despite his open-mouth panting, these licks felt a little more confident than the ones before." Per staff on 2/21: "Kennel Presentation: standing in the crate, turned head away and moved back as I began speaking to him. Lasso a leash, needed leash pressure to come out of kennel. Tucked tail, whale eye, lip licks. Leash Skills: walked slowly for a couple of steps, tucked tail and trembling. Carried outside. Stood trembling, tucked tail, eyes darting. Sociability: went between my legs, trembling, panting and drooling. Whale eye. If I moved he remained glued to my leg unless I went too far from the gate, he then retreated to the gate. Play: none Dog Interaction: met Luna toones and Sebastian. Tolerant, avoidant, tucked tail Return to Kennel: walked back to crate with Sebastian, scurried in. Color Level: exp blue Recommendations and considerations: he is likely highly under socialized to being out of his home, meeting other animals and new people and being away from doggie parents and siblings. Go slow, consider seeing a veterinary behaviorist is fear issue persist in a home" Per staff on 2/20: "Carter was in his crate I opened the door, he had soft eyes but he sat leaning away from my hand when I held it out. I shifted my weight and moved a little further back. I left a treat and shut the crate." Medical notes: Per intake exam on 2/19: "Weight: 51.5 lbs BCS: 4 - Lean Assessment -slightly stained teeth Behavior: qar (quiet, alert, responsive), friendly" ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia.
