About Rory
Rory is an adorable red and white Pekingese / Dachshund mix who is approximately 5 years old and weighs 16 lbs. He has the short nose and long coat of the Pekingese and the long body and short legs of a Dachshund. Poor Rory was dumped outside in the cold in Madison a week before the ice storm in January. :( Several kind people fed him, provided shelter and tried to catch him, but he was too skittish and scared. Then the snow and ice came. A kind neighbor found Rory huddled under her car, trying to stay warm in the ice. She managed to carry him inside, but her dog would not stop barking and growling at him. Thankfully a Freedom Farm cat foster mom saw his picture on Facebook. She dug her car out of the ice and drove to pick him up. When he was inside her home, all of the foster cats surrounded Rory, sniffed him carefully and then loved on him. Because of them, Rory loves cats and is very comfortable with them. Rory has clearly been abused because if you try to pet his head, he pulls away, and if you insist on trying to touch him, he will try to bite. He feels very safe and comfortable with his foster mom and actually enjoys pets and snuggles now from safe people. Rory did ok at the vet and was able to get neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed and on flea medication. He tested negative for heartworms and also had a negative fecal. Rory has fear aggression, so he will growl and bark at strangers because they scare him. However, with a little time and patience, as well as some tasty treats, Rory can learn to trust new people and even enjoy letting them pet him. He will need a quiet home with at least one doggie friend to help him feels safe and learn new routines. He is mostly housetrained but will need transitional housetraining in a new home. He will also need a home with hard floors because if he is given access to carpet, he will pee on it. Rory will need a securely fenced yard for potty breaks. He does walk beautifully on a leash and enjoys going on walks. Rory is crate-trained and enjoys napping in his crate sometimes, because that is his safe space. He will need a local adopter who is willing to come and visit him at least once before taking him home. Rory is particularly scared of men, so he will need a family with at least one woman living in the home. He is curious about children, but has not had any interaction with them so far. He might do ok with calm and gentle older children, as long as they allow him time to feel comfortable. Rory likes to collect cat toys and nibble on them, but he is not destructive. He does not chew on anything unless he happens to find it on the floor. Rory is highly food-motivated and will do his spinning happy dance if he thinks that he might be getting food or treats in the near future. You can see his happy dance here: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1222002690046893 Rory's adoption fee is $250. If you are interested in adopting him, please go to www.freedomfarm.net and submit an online dog adoption application. The application must be completed on a tablet or computer because it does not work on a cell phone. We will check references and our volunteers do also have full-time jobs outside of rescue work, so it may take a week or more to get a response on your application. Due to Rory's abusive past, we want to really make sure that he goes to a home where he will be safe and happy.
