About Gus
2/19/26: Foster or Foster to Adopt Home Needed! We found out last night about a local family in need. Over the past few years, they have accumulated several dropped off dogs at their home. Unfortunately, they have been unable to afford proper vetting and have had a few litters of puppies, the most recent being over the past several months. Although they were able to place a litter born in October, two of those pups have been returned recently, leading to more stress for the family. When they reached out for help from one of our volunteers, we knew we couldn't say no. Everyone meet Gus and Layla, two 18 week old 29#, Hound and Australian Shepherd + âïžmixed pups. Gus was in a home with several children, where the resident senior dog was getting too aggressive with him so the new owner felt it would be best to surrender him. He has had some training in his prior home, is friendly and outgoing and we think he would fit in to most any home. Layla is a sweet, but very shy pup at this time. Although she also came from a home with children, she is currently afraid of her own shadow. She is going to need some extra socilization, confidence building and TLC. Both pups have been in homes with dogs so they should do well if placed into homes with dog friendly dogs but they have little experience with cats if any at all. We will be helping the family with 3 other pups tomorrow, lab mix mixes ~7 weeks old. In addition, we will be providing veterinary care and spaying the two momma dogs. Although placing puppies (kittens) can be easier then adults for most people, unless you break the cycle of unwanted litters, it isn't really helping. That's why we started our Spay the Momma program ~20years ago. If we take in a litter of puppies or kittens from an owner, we will pay to have the momma spayed at our vet in order to prevent additional unwanted litters and give the momma the best chance at a healthier life. The best part? Families get to keep their momma dogs/cats if they choose to. It's a win-win! If you're able to help by fostering or foster to adopting Gus or Layla, please submit an application and call your veterinarians office in the morning to give consent to release records to us. If a labby mix may be a better match, watch out in the next day or two for another intake announcement! Due to their size, activity level and age, foster to adopt requirements are: -Living within 80 miles of Adams, NY. -Having previous/current pets in annually at a local veterinary office and up to date on vaccines as well as spay/neutered. -Being able to bring each back to our vets office in Adams for additional care prior to adoption. After adoption, we recommend taking each to your current vet to be established. -Playful dogs in the home should be ok, since they have been with other dogs previously -Homes with children over 8 years old should be ok due to their current size and activity level -Willing to have current family members come to a meet and greet to meet the pet and be sure an acceptable match. -Having time available to care for, socialize and start the training of a new pet. An adoption donation of $500 is being asked if you choose to adopt, but fostering is free. They had their initial vet check, are current on vaccines, dewormings and prescription flea and tick and heartworm medications and they will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption.
